The CEREC system makes use of the latest technology to prepare your tooth and fabricate a crown, all within a single dental visit. The affected tooth is reshaped, and an intraoral camera and CEREC software is used to get a digital impression, design your crown, and fabricate it while you wait.
Dr. Carroll can determine whether a CEREC crown is the perfect treatment for you during your first consultation. First, we must decide that your tooth is compromised enough to require a dental crown. This usually involves a complete visual exam and advanced imaging technology.
Most patients who can have a conventional dental crown should qualify for CEREC treatment. We may advocate a CEREC crown if you would like to avoid scheduling multiple appointments and spend less time in the dental chair.
The CEREC process starts with the preparation of the tooth. We will use a local anesthetic to numb the tooth and eliminate pain before reshaping the tooth's enamel. While we strive to save as much of the tooth structure as possible, it still must be recontoured entirely to accommodate the length and shape of the new crown.
After the tooth is reshaped, we will get an impression of its new size. The CEREC system uses an intraoral scanner, which takes images of your mouth in seconds. These images are then pieced together by the CEREC computer system to produce a single, three-dimensional digital model of your teeth and gums.
Next, we use this digital representation to design your new crown. Once satisfied with the design, we will send the digital design of your crown to our CEREC milling unit. This milling unit will then fabricate an accurate and well-fitting crown out of a piece of porcelain. That crown is made according to the precise dimensions of our digital design.
After your crown is ready, we will polish the crown until it matches the sheen of your smile. We will then perform some minor adjustments to provide a proper fit. Once we are satisfied with its position, we will permanently cement your crown into place using a strong adhesive.
